Born in 1979 in Shandong, the birthplace of Confucius, Mu Yu is a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese art, representing a new generation that bridges the gap between China’s rich traditional heritage and its rapidly evolving modern identity. Coming of age during the transformative period following the Cultural Revolution and Mao Zedong’s leadership, Mu Yu’s artistic journey reflects the broader social and cultural shifts under Deng Xiaoping’s reformist policies, which reopened China to the world and encouraged new modes of creative expression.

Mu Yu’s work is deeply rooted in classical Chinese artistic traditions, particularly in the 山水 (shān shuǐ) or “Mountains and Rivers” style of ink painting and watercolor.
